Yeah, a glue stick, kiddy glue for sticking paper together. They are about the same size as a lipsalve, and they have friendly little faces drawn on them, with the lid for a hat...
I prefer to think of it as a fundamental modern change in the nature of stick-formed glue products. Because, damnit, I need something to be reactionary about.
I muchly like the idea of proper books (rather than, y'know, actual literature like you find on Gutenberg) being on the internet so you can download and read...
I have, um... [checks] a CD worth of mostly non-Gutenberg plain-text material (and another CD or so of unsorted stuff); let me know if you want it and I'll fire you a copy. Mostly shockingly non-legit, mind you. I usually use it as a replacement for trying to find a passage in the paper copy.
The author's an odd type; very much aiming for that end of the curve, the old IP model is obsoleted, &c &c. We shall see, but he seems to be doing well enough out of it so far, ditto a couple of his compatriots. It's a model we'll be seeing more of, though at the moment it's small enough you can name the people doing it easily enough. And the entire non-fiction world is still trying to figure out what to do with digitisation; it's a very open field.
I think my dad's company is doing something with the Bodelean at the moment to the tune of digitising their entire collection in the next decade, or something.
What exactly's on the CD? Is it interesting? :P
I like reading off a screen considerably more than reading off a page - there are so many dyslexia tricks to do with keeping your place in the text and making the colours and the glare less distracting that you can do onscreen but not with a book.
Yeah, the industrial-scale work is interesting. CMU is, IIRC, trying to digitise everything they have, and in the process - almost as an afterthought - arranging the project so it includes the National Library of India. Which means some really remarkable steps for OCR development; all those charsets!
The, ah, unofficial digitisation programs reflect the cultural ethos of those doing such work. So there's a lot of sf/f. Mostly bad. I mean, the collected works of McCaffrey are not exactly a cultural touchstone.
*grin*, no, but they're actually something I would like to have on my computer, for almost exactly the same reason as the bad harry potter porn written by fourteen year olds I occasionally get cravings for...
Oh, and lest I forget - what are you doing up? You have exams, young lady! Or if you don't, other people do and you need to, uh, set a good example, or something!
eurgh *washes out own mouth in sypathy* (surely it cant just be me who needs to lick her lips after putting on lipsalve, despite the lack of logic therein)
