... so I'm cheating, and dredging up and re-working some old stuff to try and catch up. Don't think any of you except [personal profile] opportunemoment or [personal profile] cottonwoolfairy will have seen it before.

This is a random piece of random randomness.

Once upon a time, all the little people who control my head had to write a music essay.

Before we’d even started, Slacker and Rebel had both agreed that there was no point in doing the essay. Rebel said that doing homework was far too conformist and too much like showing support for an unjust and generally fucked education system. Slacker said that she wanted some coffee.

Politician said that seeing as they were in the minority, and the rest of us could basically see the point of writing the essay, they’d better shut up whinging and let us get on with it. Both Goth and Conformist opened their mouths to point out that they didn’t see the point in writing the essay either, but Politician glared at them, and neither of them could be bothered to argue with her.

We started out with Perfectionist doing the typing cos she tends to do schoolwork the best, but the trouble was, she wasn’t sure she was going to be able to write a very good music essay. She wasn’t sure we understood the question, and she was sure that we hadn’t studied the set work carefully enough. Cleverclogs pointed out that if we were going to learn how to write decent music essays, then we had to practice, and writing one slightly crappy music essay wasn’t the end of the world, and would be a learning experience. But Perfectionist was already in a complete panic, because it wasn’t good enough. She gave up on writing the music essay, and sat in a corner of my head, panicking quietly.

Politician then pointed out that it was Prima-Donna who was actually interested in music, so she should write the essay. But Prima-Donna said that analysing music was stupid and pointless, and the only purpose of music was to perform, and what was the point in writing about it? It was stupid and pointless. Poet said that it might help us to find out things about the music which would help us to perform it better, and anyway was only like analysing poetry, which we quiet like… but Slacker pointed out that we don’t necessarily even like that, because some of us think that poetry and music both are there to be enjoyed not analysed and the only thing talking about them does is make us sound like a complete ponce. Conformist whole-heartedly agreed, and pointed out that some of us don’t even like classical music, and just reading poetry is far too bloody poncy. Slacker looked as though she would have punched Conformist right then for being so shallow and annoying, if it wasn’t for the fact that she was almost passing out with shock over the fact that they’d almost actually agreed on something.

Politician tried to calm things down, by saying we should talk about things rationally. As usual, the response was that everyone started shouting at once. Eventually Politician got us to shut up, and said that seeing as it was Poet and Cleverclogs who thought that they could see the point of writing the essay, maybe they should do it, while the rest of us left them alone to concentrate. Cleverclogs went very quiet, and eventually admitted that she only did English essays. Poet sighed deeply, and said she’d give it a go. We left her in charge of the keyboard, and fucked off to let her get on with it.

When we got back, twenty minutes later, the music essay wasn’t written, but there was a brand new poem doodled in the margin of our extract book. Poet blushed, and pointed out that we all knew she had a motivation problem, and so it wasn’t her fault. Perfectionist pointed out that we weren’t supposed to write in extract books under any circumstances, and even if we rubbed out the poem, it was going to be all smudgy, and… not perfect.

Pig-tails then burst into tears and said that the essay was too hard and very scary, and that we were going to be in trouble for not doing it, and for writing in our extract book. Goth agreed with her, and pointed out that we might as well slit our wrists now. Pig-tails cried even harder. Rebel said that we shouldn’t worry about getting in trouble, and Conformist agreed. Rebel pointed out that she had an actual reason for not caring about getting in trouble, vis being an anarchist, a non-conformist, and out to make as much trouble for the establishment as possible, screw the consequences. Conformist, she continued, was just trying to act hard to look cool. Conformist went all indignant, and said that she could rebel too, if she wanted to. The rest of us had hysterics at the sheer contradictoryness of that. Even Perfectionist cheered up, and Pig-tails laughed her head off, even though I’m not sure she got the joke.

Then Slacker pointed out that it was eleven o clock at night, and there was no point trying to write the essay now, because there was no way we’d get it done. Cleverclogs pointed out that we think better late at night, so maybe it would be the perfect time to write the essay. Slacker said she didn’t care, she was tired and wanted to go to bed. We all argued about this for a while, and then Politician yelled that we should take a vote. After setting up the secret ballot, we voted, and decided to go to bed. Rebel pointed out that democracy is screwed, and therefore we should ignore the results of the vote and write the essay now… but everybody else had pretty much fallen asleep, and she wasn’t prepared to write the essay herself, so she gave up the argument.

Just as we’d all drifted off, Insomniac crashed in from where ever it was she’d been and woke us all up. We swore at her and threw things, and then went back to sleep.
