Nov. 22nd, 2004 08:55 pmI met Seamus Heaney today.
At the drinks event after Christopher Ricks' inaugral lecture as professor of poetry.
He was very Irish, and cheeful, and faintly drunk. He actually chatted with... well, with everyone, but specifically with the undergrads that were around. He made jokes. He was going to dinner with Tom Stoppard and Richard Attenburough when he'd finished at the drinks event, to pick up some honarary award or another, about which he was very non-plussed and making jokes. And he remembered the guy in charge of Magdalen poetry soc from the only other time they'd met, which I thought was very sweet of him.
Christopher Ricks is a great public speaker, although he was talking about translating poetry, and the poetry was largely in French, and he didn't provide translations, so I lost him quite quickly. Still, he's witty and interesting, specially when he was talking about the value of all kinds of different writing.
It was one of those moments that made me glad to be in Oxford.

I met you through
lucy_lupin - I think it was probably because of a shared love of all things Joss, although it could equally well have been any one of a hundred other shared interests.
You are funny and sweet. Your posts almost always make me smile, or squee, or laugh, or all three. I love it when you get geekishly excited about things. I love it when you post poetry and music, and I love it when you post tiny details of your life. You are always cute or interesting or both.
I admire your strength, your ability to change the way things are going, or keep going, and bounce back, and laugh again. You give me hope. Can't think of a less clumsy or cheesy way of putting it, so there you go. *slightly sheepish grin*
I love the fact that you actually like it when I talk about Buffy or other pop culture stuff in an analytical way, and don't just say 'oh for god's sake stop being such a poncy git' :), you join in and give me something to bounce my burbling off. I love love love the fact that you set up a community where I can do this to my heart's content. (Which reminds me, give me two weeks to finish term and then a week to put it together, and I'll do a post on Joss' use of music for
my_frikkin_show)
This time last year you gave me some of the best advice anyone has ever given to me, and I will never, ever forget that. It meant the world. And yeah, like I said, I still have those e-mails too.
And you were the first person who told me to watch Firefly, and you were right.
I really do hope that one day we will meet in RL.
