An overturn to the hideous DLA reforms is being proposed in the House of Commons as an EDM (Early Day Motion): http://thebrokenofbritain.blogspot.com/2011/01/early-day-motion-on-disability-living.html

This is a huge step forwards to having our concerns taken seriously. If you believe that the changes to DLA are unfair, please please click the link above write to your MP and ask them to sign the ammendment. (http://www.theyworkforyou.com)

(If you do not believe that changes to DLA are unfair, try reading this: http://thetopsoil.org.uk/2011/62
or this: http://diaryofabenefitscrounger.blogspot.com/2011/01/nowhere-to-turn-for-vulnerable.html?spref=tw
or these: http://onemonthbeforeheartbreak.blogspot.com/

Even if you believe that cuts should occur, surely, surely these are not the people we should be targeting. Surely these are people that we should be protecting. )

Unfortunately whoever has written that EDM has made it more awkward to sign by bundling the housing benefit cap in; have made noise in the direction of my MP anyway.

... I don't see a reference to the HB cap in the EDM text. Now, my reading comprehension can sometimes be funny... what am I missing?

There are two EDMs... weird

http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=41309&SESSION=905

and

http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=42351&SESSION=905

the second one is better worded, I am convinced I was linked the first one from your post but I have no idea where it came from as I can't find it any more

How odd! Pretty sure I linked the second one; I didn't know Fiona O'Donnel had done one as well, I'm pretty sure the one I'd read was the Hywel one, cos I remember noticing the Welsh name. Doesn't mean it was the one I linked to originally, and I did in fact edit the post after posting, so...

Yeah, the second one is the one I meant.

(FWIW, I do think housing benefit cap ought to be higher for people with certain disabilities, as cheap housing is often exceptionally inaccessible, and shared accomodation often not possible. However. Seperate issue. One thing at a time, yes.)

Thank-you for this.

I've written to Mike Weatherly, MP for Hove and Portslade; and asked for a response on this, and propogated. I'm afraid that I stole the text of this post for a chunk of the letter to him, as it sums up better than I ever could.

Brilliant. Thank you for keeping us informed.

(My MP says that as a cabinet minister, he can't sign EDMs*, but I shall signal boost.)

*In fact-checking this, I came across the wonderful rule that in an EDM, "no unparliamentary language or irony should be used." -- parliament.uk on EDMs

It would get very confusing very quickly if early day motions were allowed to use irony! "Wait - when you said that the Governments reforms were generous, did you actually mean generous or ungenerous?"

by that logic no politician should ever use irony, really.

Did you hear the thing about the press complaints comission and Littlejohn, on the subject of use of irony?

Have written to my MP - and thank you SO MUCH for this post, and for keeping us informed. Really. I am really glad to be able to do something but haven't been following it as closely as I should.

My MP is Hazel Blears, however, so she may have already signed it anyway!

*grin* there's a snowball's chance in hell of my MP signing it even though I write to him, so it all ballances out. Or something. *headdesk*
